about

A derelict power station gasping for breath; a long-abandoned beacon howling in the midst of a black blizzard; a ghost city precariously nested in the swaying limbs of a colossal tree: these are a few of the hallucinatory landscapes conjured by electronic musician and composer Chace Wall on his first full-length album Exo. Set amongst the stars, Exo is an hour-long collection of studio works that envision decrepit monolithic structures on unexplored extrasolar planets. Given only the scientific name of the planet and a few cues from the auditory landscape, the listener is dropped in the midst of enormous objects to ponder their function and history, and left to bask in the potentialities that arise when context and significance are left undefined.

Each track is a unique world in-and-of itself, full of subtle interactions that create immersive auditory experiences and straddle the line between the absolutely musical and the cinematic. Exo leaves few musical stones unturned – field recordings, tape manipulation, found audio, granular synthesis, noise, cracked media, and a host of signal processing strategies contribute to the patchwork of electronic music techniques that make each aural environment a singular experience. While Wall has developed a compositional language that is his own, more familiar voices also emerge from the celestial ether: the erratically interweaving drones of La Monte Young, the ear-shattering roars of Merzbow, the perplexing soundscapes of Brian Eno, and the elegant stillness of Morton Feldman all echo through the album’s haunting tableaus.
